California communities are trying to cope with an historic drought—one that has forced mandatory water reductions across the state. School districts must slash their water usage while facing other harsh impacts of the drought. The effects are most profound in schools in the Central Valley—the heart of the state’s farm belt—where districts are dealing with dry wells, “dust days,” and the anxieties of families whose jobs in agriculture are drying up with the water. California photographer Matt Black has been documenting the drought and its devastating impacts in many of the small, farming communities between Fresno and Bakersfield.
